Coyle singles out Elmander

Bolton manager Owen Coyle highlighted the performance of Johan Elmander in his team’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United.

The Trotters twice led at the Reebok thanks to strikes from Zat Knight and Martin Petrov, but Nani and Michael Owen ensured a pulsating game finished even.

Bolton could feel aggrieved not to have taken all three points given the chances they created, one of which was spurned by Elmander moments before Owen’s leveller.

And Coyle was eager to praise the work of the Swede as part of his team’s impressive showing.

“That chance would never have happened if Johan hadn’t taken the ball, driven 40 yards and beat three or four men,” said Coyle.

“He was magnificent today. He is a player playing at the top of his confidence.

“On another day that ball would have rolled into the top corner.

“I am certainly not going to criticise a player who’s given me everything and shown unbelievable quality as well.”

Coyle admitted to being frustrated at the outcome as Wanderers twice let their advantage slip but was content with a draw against title hopefuls United.

He added: “Having led twice, we were disappointed to give up those leads, but you have to give balance to the unbelievable individual quality they have.”

The Reebok chief also had words of encouragement for Rooney after the England frontman endured a difficult afternoon in his first appearance away from Old Trafford since the storm over his private life erupted.

“Wayne Rooney as a footballer is an absolutely class act,” Coyle said. “I have always felt Manchester United and England as a country are very fortunate to have him.”
