Downpour delays men’s final

The US Open men’s singles final between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic has been postponed until Monday.

The Flushing Meadows showpiece was due to begin on Sunday at 21:30 BST but tournament officials announced the match was abandoned after persistent downpour in New York.

Rain began falling about two hours before Nadal and Djokovic were scheduled to start and the postponement is the third straight year the season’s final major tournament will finish a day late.

Third-seed Djokovic will welcome the extra rest after he made it to the final with a gruelling five-set win over Roger Federer on Saturday. Top seed Nadal, who is bidding to become the youngest man to win the career Grand Slam, triumphed over Mikhail Youzhny in straight sets.

The women’s doubles final was also abandoned after play was halted in the third set, and will recommence on Arthur Ashe Stadium at 20:00.

The men’s final will follow that match at no earlier than 21:00.

The marks the first three-year string of delayed finishes since the men’s and women’s singles competitions were combined and played at the same site in 1935.
