Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez is delighted to have won the top scorer’s award in the Bundesliga and wants to carry on bagging the goals for his side.

The 25-year-old finished the 2010-11 season with 28 goals in the league and 39 in all competitions, and also netted in the Bavarians’ 2-1 victory over Stuttgart on Saturday.

Gomez is the first German in 30 years to have scored 28 league goals in a season and now aims to better the 29-league goal record set by Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1980-81.

“I won’t stop trying now I’ve won this award,” said Gomez, according to AFP. “I’ll try and score at least as many goals next season too, or maybe even more. Who knows?

“I’ve carved out a place for myself at this club now. For many years, I dreamed of an important role at Germany’s best club, and I’ve got that now.

“I’ll do everything I can to keep it that way in the future. Winning the cannon was a childhood dream. I’m proud to be listed alongside so many illustrious names.”

Bayern finished the campaign third in the Bundesliga and will have to go through a qualifier to progress to next season’s Champions League group stage.

After throwng away a two goal lead at Wigan, West Ham have ended their six year stint in the Premier League.

The Hammers were relegated after failing to pick up the win they needed at the DW Stadium and stay in touch with the relegation pack. Wigan, though, have given themselves a huge boost in the fight for survival with the win; drawing level on 39 points with 17th place Blackpool and Birmingham just one place about them.

The Latics face Stoke on the Premier League’s final round of games next Sunday, while Blackpool face the unenviable task of going to Old Trafford looking for a win.

It all looked rosey for West Ham after Demba Ba’s early brace gave them a 2-0 lead, but goals from Charles N’Zogbia and Conor Sammon turned the game around for the home side and left the Hammers facing the cruel realisation they were heading down.

It marks a return to England’s second tier for the first time since 2005 when West Ham were promoted after beating Preston 1-0 in the play-off final, having lost to the unfancied Crystal Palace a year previously.

After losing their bid to take over the Olympic Stadium in Stratford in 2012 it marks an end to a disappointing season for West Ham and casts serious doubt over the future of manager Avram Grant.

Stuttgart have announced the signing of French-born winger Ibrahima Traore from Augsburg. The 23-year-old midfielder has agreed to a three-year deal with the Swabians.

“Ibrahima Traore is a young and motivated player who wants to prove himself at VfB,” Stuttgart sporting director Fredi Bobic told reporters upon announcing the move.

Traore made one Bundesliga appearance for Hertha BSC before moving to Augsburg in 2009. Since then, he has scored eight goals in 41 appearances in the 2. Bundesliga.

Though Augsburg managed to be promoted to the 1. Bundesliga this year, the left winger opted out of signing a contract extension, and moves to Swabia on a free transfer.

After Tamas Hajnal, Traore is the second player to sign with Stuttgart in recent days.

COMMENT
By Wayne Veysey

Damien Comolli and Ian Ayre both used the term “no-brainer”. John Henry settled for “obvious”.

Nevertheless, the appointment of Kenny Dalglish as Liverpool’s permanent manager provoked an immediate outpouring of joy among supporters who have dared to dream again following the revival led by the one they call ‘King’ in the red side of Merseyside.

Dalglish & Clarke given three-year contracts

It is not just the upturn in results since his caretaker appointment in January – recording 10 wins, three draws and just three defeats – that served to make the reward of a three-year contract to Dalglish and his under-stated but highly influential No. 2 Steve Clarke a formality.

It also is the majesty of the team’s football, culminating in the swagger of Monday’s 5-2 mauling of Fulham at Craven Cottage on Monday.

Interestingly, Comolli compared Dalglish to another consummate football man early into his seventh decade – the Frenchman’s countryman and former Arsenal colleague, Arsene Wenger.

“I think the two share the same qualities,” said Comolli. “The first thing is the quality of the football. Kenny insists on quality of passing and movement on the pitch. Secondly, they both like intelligent players who can see things. When Kenny talks about players, he talks about whether they can see a pass in the final third. What about their vision? That’s something Arsene talks about.

“They both have a massive ability to give confidence to the team and to the players. They bring self-belief into the young players by saying ‘you are good so that is why you are playing’. That gives fantastic confidence to young players. The other thing they say is, ‘don’t do anything different to what you have been doing. It doesn’t matter that you’re at Anfield or the Emirates, just play your normal game. If I pick you it’s because you are good enough’.”

Return of the king | Kenny Dalglish is back on his Anfield throne – to the delight of fans

Some eulogy, that, from a director of football who had been ordered shortly after his appointment last autumn to search the globe for an up-and-coming managerial star around whom Liverpool could build the club for the next decade.

Instead, the man the American owners needed all along had been waiting on their doorstep, aching to pull on the padded jacket that had been untouched for more than a decade.

Sunday’s home game against Tottenham will now be more than just an end-of-season tussle for a fifth spot that Liverpool appear to want more than their north London visitors.

It will be party time, a mass opportunity to celebrate Dalglish’s appointment and rubberstamp the transformation of the club that, back in October, was staring at the Championship, administration, despised owners and an unpopular manager.

Dalglish admitted in his pre-match press conference this afternoon, timed to coincide with his appointment, that there will be plenty of comings and goings this summer.

Speculation will now grow about which players will fill the apparently available wide midfield, centre-back, left-back and midfield anchorman positions.

But, as anyone with any knowledge of the parlous state of the club six months ago will appreciate, the most significant signing the club will make in this or any other year has already been made.

Belief and unity, two qualities conspicuous by their absence during the dog days of 2010, have been restored and the results speak for themselves. Only Chelsea who, it should be noted, relieved Anfield of its prize asset in the final minutes of the January window, have accrued more league points than Liverpool in the second half of the season.

Watching him in Liverpool’s intimate press room josh with Merseyside reporters, here looked a man comfortable in his skin and comfortable with the sizeable task that awaits.

The king is back on his throne, and his subjects could not be any happier.

It may not be the famous Anfield boot toom of Ronnie Moran, Roy Evans et al under which Dalglish learned his trade as a young manager. But the Scot has proved he is no dinosaur by adapting and thriving 26 years after first entering the dugout.

With Comolli’s contacts network, Ayre’s commercial acumen and the Dalglish/Clarke alliance pulling the strings on the pitch, a new backroom set-up fit for a 21st century club has been installed at Liverpool today.

David Moyes will send Everton starlet Jack Rodwell off with the England Under-21 squad to the European Championships this Summer with his blessing.

The Blues boss has refused to join a list of managers concerned with the participation of their club’s young talent and instead insists he is happy for the 20-year-old to participate.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has made his concerns known about Jack Wilshere’s expected participation in the competition, but Moyes is adamant that, for his player, it is the right thing to do.

“Jack has had a few injuries which have disrupted things but he is coming along fine,” Moyes told the Daily Mail.

“It’s a good tournament for him to be involved in and I’m happy for him to be playing. I’ve got no problems with it.”

Debate has raged as to whether the likes of Wilshere and Joe Hart should step down from senior duty to take part in Denmark and whilst Moyes is sending his young asset off with his backing, he admits the tournament will have an effect on those taking part in the latter stages.

“The problems may come next year for the lads who play the full month,” added the Everton boss.

“It will be like it is for the England senior boys, who went to the World Cup last summer.

“There will be an effect but hopefully it will help his development.”

Manchester City are considering whether to make an offer for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Douglas Costa, according to the player’s agent.

The Brazilian has been linked with a move to the Premier League with Manchester United and Chelsea, but now City have appeared to enter the race to sign the talented 20-year-old.

Agent Cesar Bottega also stated Serie A side Napoli are in the running, so Roberto Mancini will face competition for the highly rated midfielder.

Bottega told notiziariosportivo.com: “I have spoken a few times with Manchester City.

“They have shown interest in the player and are now considering whether to enter into a negotiation or not.

“I am planning a trip to Europe in a fortnight, but if something were to change I’m ready to leave earlier.”

As regards interest from Italy, he added: “Napoli have followed the player’s performance in the Champions League, then I don’t know if there were concrete contacts, I have not been contacted.

“Logically, they will first, in any case, contact the company.”

City currently lie in fourth place in the Premier League after a 2-1 victory over West Ham United last week as they hope to secure the final Champions League spot.

For the vast majority of the football world, Wednesday night’s Argentine reserve clash between Boca Juniors and Independiente would have passed completely unnoticed; but for one player at least there was extra incentive to shine. Sergio Araujo of Boca knew that Barcelona ‘super-scout’ Albert Valentin was in attendance to see what he could do on the field, even though bitter rivals have a first option on the 19-year-old.

Barely 19 and yet to stake a claim for a regular place in the Xeneixe first team, yet in the sights of two of the world’s biggest football institutions: is this youngster the real deal? Goal.com takes a closer look at the promising striker…

So what’s his record like?

So far, he can boast 8 goals in 24 career appearances. At first glance, a 1 in 3 scoring record isn’t bad but he’s actually better than that. Of those games, he’s got one goal in nine games for Boca, but you can forgive him given he only started three of those. His real goal-scoring exploits have come at youth levels, both for Boca and at international youth level. Barcelona watched him in the reserves last night but he was a peripheral figure as Independiente won 1-0, Cristian Báez with the decisive strike.

Who does he play like?

It’s hard to compare him to anyone really, he is six foot tall and of normal build. His real strength is his quick feet, he will pull a trick to get a yard on a defender and then shoot. He is more likely to create a goal from nothing than be a poacher-style centre-forward. He has the potential to become a similar sort of player to Diego Forlan, assured on the ball and with an unerring eye for goal- but there are no further obvious comparisons.

SNAPSHOT | Sergio Araujo (Boca Juniors & Argentina U20s)

Age: 19

Intl Youth Apps: 15 (7 goals)

	Position: AM/Striker

Value: Unknown

10/11 apps: 1 (0 goals)

Plays most like: A fresh-faced Diego Forlan
In five words: Great potential, still question marks

Where will he have caught Barcelona’s eye?

This spring he played in the prodigious Bellinzona tournament in Switzerland against some of the best youth sides in the world and clearly impressed the hordes of onlooking scouts. His success in the Under-17 tournaments he has played at international level will have first alerted European scouts.

So why hasn’t he featured much this season?

A good question. He had a disappointing tournament in the South American Under-20 Championships at the start of 2011, but then again so did Argentina, finishing third behind neighbours Brazil and Uruguay. New Boca manager Julio Cesar Falcioni has only used him on one occasion, as a sub whilst 2-0 down at home to Olimpo, preferring the ever-willing but never-scoring Pablo Mouche.

Are there any doubts over his ability?

He’s certainly shown buckets of ability when given the chance, but players that have shone on the Under-17 circuit have sometimes failed to convert that promise into a real career; Brazillians Lulinha and Kerlon spring to mind from recent years. He’s shown enough promise to convince Real Madrid to purchase a first option on him a few years back though.

And what does he have to say about everything?

He’s not huge on media, but of the Madrid situation he said “It is true that they have that option and I’m flattered, but first I want to show with Boca that I have the ability to play for Madrid.” He’s a big family man and after his first ever Boca goal vs Arsenal de Sarandí he said “I would like to dedicate it to my parents, who always support me. Poor them, they didn’t come to the stadium, because when they don’t watch me play, I score goals.”

Perhaps Sergio and Boca Juniors will be hoping that his parents stay well away from La Bombonera in the future.

The victorious Nigerian U20 side that defeated Cameroon 3-2 to lift the African Youth Championship title in Johannesburg on Sunday arrived back home on Monday into the arms of happy officials and a grateful country.

A message from President Goodluck Jonathan praised the team for its “doggedness and resilience.”

The team will lead Africa’s charge to the World Youth Championship in Colombia this July. It now has the onerous task of trying to equal the feat of neigbours Ghana who won the world title in 2009, the first for any African country.

Nigeria have twice been runners up on the world stage. They lost to Portugal in 1989 and to Argentina in 2005.

Team coach John Obuh knows there’s a huge task ahead of him and his lads, but will fight till the end.

“It doesn’t really bother me,” Obuh told KickOffNigeria.com. “Our goal is to go there and take it one game at a time. If we focus on playing the team in front of us, we can go as far as possible.”

For the tournament in Colombia, Nigeria are expected to begin preparations with a trip to South Korea for a four nation competition this week. The Flying Eagles have been drawn alongside Croatia, Saudi Arabia and Guatemala in Group D.
